We get a lot of questions on what a Lean Product Manager is. Hopefully this will help clarify this very unique role in the Pollenizer Talent universe.
What do they do?
Lean Product Managers bridge the problem and solution spaces. In the problem space, the product manager works to uncover customer problems, identify those that the customer is willing to pay to solve, and then confirms that there are enough customers who share the problem to constitute a market.
In the solution space, the product manager works with designers, user experience experts, and engineers to explore possible solutions to the problem. The goal is to find a solution that is technically feasible and can be:
- Produced at a cost well below the price the customer is willing to pay
- Delivered and serviced through a distribution channel that can reach the target market cost effectively
- Differentiated from the competitive alternatives
Thus, the faster and more cost‐effectively the product manager, working with the product team, can achieve product‐market fit, the better the absolute and risk‐adjusted return on the product – for two reasons:
- A better fit leads to a more appealing product for the target market
- A faster fit means the product will enjoy maximum differentiation for a longer period of time.
As product managers learn new ways to achieve product‐market fit faster and with fewer resources, they become more effective, their products more successful, and their companies more profitable. A great product manager can create a successful product, and a great product management process can lead to sustainable, long‐term competitive advantage for the company.
