OK FEO is a stupid term I just made up but Facebook optimisation is serious business. Everyone is marketing through Facebook Pages (and Groups) these days but how much thought are people putting into optimising them? When you create a Facebook page you need to give it a name, description, vanity url, tabs and content, but how much effect can those elements have on your success? Here are some of the areas that are essential to consider:
Page Title
As shown here, the title of the your page can have a massive impact on whether it’s displayed in Facebook’s own search results:
But what are people searching for on Facebook and where can we get data to help us decide what terms to target?
URL
Vanity URLs are generally short URLs that you can assign to your Facebook page. E.g. If you’re business name is Big Blue Dog Food Australia you’d get assigned Facebook.com/bigbluedogfoodaustralia by default but you could pick a vanity URL like Facebook.com/dogfood. The URL you choose will obviously effect what your page gets indexed for in Google E.g.:
Description
When you setup your page there lots of places you can describe your business including the the Info tab and About box. Google will index all this content and may even use it as your description in their search results, E.g.:
The About us text above was used here:
Tabs
There are a couple of things to consider with tabs, firstly you can add custom tabs with any content you like which is a great way to ensure your page is full of keyword rich content. Secondly you can select which tab is the default tab and therefore the first page google indexes. E.g. Marvel have added a tab called Captain America and made it their default tab to announce the launch of the movie:
This is just the tip of the iceberg there are loads of other elements you could start tweaking with to optimise your Facebook pages, if anyone out there has any other tips I’d love to hear them!
